The Wind
We have to understand what the wind does with our scent. A common issue we see with the plans we work on are stand locations on the leeward side of hills and in ravines. As the wind traces these areas, it swirls unpredictably. Your scent goes everywhere, and its advantage deer. Deer like to bed in these bottoms and leeward locales, and although the sign is tempting, we must avoid setting stands in these areas. The impact is too high and we will burn those spots out forcing the deer to the neighbors or creating nighttime movement we can not hunt.
Play the wind is not as simple as it may sound. Pick your stand sites with a knowledge of the how the wind will affect the areas deer.
